UPDF Changes Command Of United Nations Guard Unit In Somalia

The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Force contingent serving under the United Nations Guard Unit in Somalia has marked a change of command, with Lt Col Peter Barigye handing over leadership of UNGU XI to Lt Col Nathan Akankunda, the incoming commander of UNGU XII.

The handover ceremony was presided over by the Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General, Raisedon Zenenga, who conveyed the United Nations’ gratitude to the outgoing contingent and commended the troops for maintaining high security standards throughout their tour of duty.

“Members of UNGU XI have honoured the United Nations, their country Uganda and the UPDF with their dedication, discipline and professionalism. Your effective safeguarding of United Nations personnel, facilities and assets in Mogadishu has enabled the UN family to deliver on its mandate,” he said.

Mr Zenenga observed that the absence of significant security incidents within the camp reflected the contingent’s vigilance and strong collaboration with counterparts under the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM).

The AUSSOM Force Commander, Lt Gen Sam Kavuma, praised the outgoing commander and his team for completing their tour of duty with distinction.

“You can walk with your heads held high because you did it. You have finished your mission with dignity and honour, and you have represented Uganda well,” said Lt Gen Kavuma.

In his remarks, Lt Col Barigye thanked the UPDF leadership for the trust placed in him and stated that UNGU XI had executed its assignment in Somalia with commitment and professionalism.

Lt Col Akankunda, in his remarks, congratulated UNGU XI on their performance and pledged to build on their achievements.

He promised to diligently execute the UNGU mandate and called for continued support, coordination and cooperation from the Force Commander and the wider UN fraternity in Somalia during his tenure.

The ceremony was attended by senior and junior officers from AUSSOM Sector One, UNGU XI and UNGU XII.
