UPDF and Somali Forces Liberate Key Town from Al-Shabaab in Somalia

The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces troops serving under the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), together with the Somalia National Army (SNA), have captured the strategic town of Darusalam in the Lower Shabelle region from the Al-Shabaab terrorist group.

The operation comes after the liberation of Mubarak Town and is part of ongoing efforts to dismantle the extremist group’s strongholds in southern Somalia.

Brigadier General Jackson Kayanja, the Sector One Contingent Commander and overall leader of the mission, said the success underscores the effectiveness of joint military operations.

“The liberation of Darusalam demonstrates the strength of our forces and our commitment to restoring stability and peace in Somalia,” he said.

Colonel Owiny Akena, the Battle Group 44 Commander, added that securing Darusalam will improve safety for civilians, enable humanitarian aid delivery, and strengthen government presence in the area. He pledged that the joint forces would maintain pressure on the insurgents to prevent any return.

Local leaders and residents welcomed the intervention, expressing hope that the restored security will allow economic and social activities to resume.
