United Nations Honours UPDF Peacekeepers In Somalia

Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces peacekeepers serving under the United Nations Guard Unit XI (UNGU XI) have been awarded medals in recognition of their service in securing United Nations premises and supporting peace and stability in Somalia.

The medals were presented by the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in Somalia, James Swan, during a ceremony held at the UNGU premises in Mogadishu.

He commended the Ugandan contingent for their professionalism and steadfast commitment to safeguarding UN facilities and enabling the organisation to carry out its mandate.

“The decoration you receive today reflects your commitment to security, and because you are here, we can do our work,” he said.

Mr. Swan highlighted the contribution of female peacekeepers in peace operations, praising their resilience and dedication to global peace and security.

The Force Commander of the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia, Lieutenant General Sam Kavuma, commended the recipients for their performance during their tour of duty.

“Medals are not given to everyone in service but are awarded for exemplary and exceptional performance. They are being awarded to you for the great job done,” he said.

The UNGU XI Commander Lt Col Peter Ruyogoza Barigye expressed gratitude to the United Nations and partner organisations for the opportunity to serve, praising the troops for their resilience throughout the tour of duty.

“Today’s medal award ceremony is a testament to the dedication, hard work, and unwavering commitment shown by the personnel who are represented here by a few,” he noted.

The ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including Defence Attaché at the Ugandan Embassy Brig Gen Francis Chemengich Chemo; AUSSOM Sector One Commander Brig Gen Jackson Kayanja; AUSSOM Police Commissioner AIGP Hillary Sao Kanu; Principal Security Advisor Joseph Katuramu; Chief PREMSEC Pathou Gangale; and a representative of the Somali community, Mama Halima, among others.
