UNGU-XI Commander Commissions New Tower Mast in Somalia

The Commander of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) Contingent under the United Nations Guard Unit (UNGU XI), Lt Col Peter Ruyogoza Barigye, has commissioned a newly installed internet network tower at the Emergency Response Team (ERT) Company headquarters in Mogadishu.

The state-of-the-art mast, constructed by UNGU XI network engineers from the Joint Staff Communication, Information Technology, and Signals (JSCITS).

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Lt Col Barigye commended the UPDF leadership, the JSCITS engineers, and technicians for their tireless efforts in designing and installing the mast to meet the unit’s operational needs.

“Always consult the ICTS department whenever you experience any technical issue to avoid unnecessary damage,” he advised.

Lt Col Barigye noted that the tower marks a turning point in the unit’s ability to respond to threats and protect UN personnel and assets.

“This network tower is a game-changer for our operations. It will enable us to respond more quickly and effectively to emerging situations, and enhance our overall situational awareness,” he said.

UNGU-XI Communications Officer and head of the ICTS unit, Capt Mansur Lukyamuzi Mupenzi, said the installation of the mast and accompanying network boosters had addressed persistent connectivity challenges.

Capt Joseph Maada Edube, the UNGU XI Military Information Officer, emphasised that the improved network will enhance its capabilities.

Representing the ERT Company Commander, Lt Fred Kirya thanked Lt Col Barigye and the CITS team for the intervention.

“The installation of this mast marks a major milestone in our efforts to leverage technology and improve operational readiness,” he said.

He acknowledged the support of the United Nations and other stakeholders in strengthening stability and security in the region.
