UN Deputy Representative Praises UPDF Troops in Somalia for Enhancing Confidence and National Reputation

The Deputy Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Somalia, Raisedon Zenenga, has commended Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces troops serving in Somalia under the United Nations Guard Unit for boosting confidence among UN personnel and upholding Uganda’s reputation with distinction.

“UNGU X has carried out its duties with professionalism and dedication. Their efforts in protecting the UN in Mogadishu have enabled the organisation to achieve its mandate by providing a secure and enabling environment,” H.E Zenenga said.

Speaking to the troops during the change of command of the United Nations Guard Unit (UNGU X) in Mogadishu, H.E Zenenga lauded the troops for their dedication and emphasized that Uganda should take pride in their service and reaffirmed the UN’s deep appreciation for their commitment.

The change of command witnessed Lt Col Peter Ruyogoza Barigye take over command from Lt Col David Emmanuel Odong, who has completed his one-year tour of duty.

Lt Gen Sam Kavuma, the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) Force Commander, reminded the troops of their mandate to provide security for the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) and the United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS).

Lt Gen Kavuma commended Lt Col Odong for his leadership in safeguarding communities, securing key infrastructure, and strengthening trust in Somalia.

He urged the incoming commander, Lt Col Barigye, to maintain the high standards set by his predecessor, emphasising that leadership is about unity, collaboration, and leading by example.

Lt Gen Kavuma acknowledged the resilience of the Somali people, the dedication of the troops, and international support.

He emphasized that while Somalia’s path to stability is challenging, it is achievable through courage, integrity, and respect for humanity.

Lt Col Odong expressed his gratitude to the UPDF leadership for the opportunity to serve in UNGU and contribute to peacekeeping efforts.

Lt Col Barigye pledged to build on his predecessor’s achievements. He thanked the UPDF leadership for entrusting him with the role and committed to working closely with UN partners to fulfill the unit’s mandate.
