Barawe Youth Urged To Harness Peace For Socio-Economic Development

The Commander of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) Battle Group 45, serving under the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), Colonel Justus Musenene, has urged the youth of Barawe District to capitalise on the prevailing peace and stability by engaging in productive activities that improve their livelihoods and contribute to the district’s socio-economic development.

Col Musenene made the remarks during a meeting with leaders of the Barawe District Youth Council at the Battle Group 45 Headquarters in Embresso, Barawe District.

He called on the youth to embrace patriotism and nationalism, saying love for one’s country is fundamental to achieving sustainable development.

“Patriotism and nationalism are the foundation of lasting socio-economic transformation. As young people, you have a responsibility to safeguard your country and contribute positively to its development,” he said.

Col Musenene commended the youth for their continued support to AUSSOM and urged them to reject the influence of Al-Shabaab by working closely with AUSSOM forces to preserve the peace and security currently enjoyed in the area.

Speaking on behalf of the Chairperson of the Barawe District Youth Council, the General Secretary, Mr Hassan Mohammed, commended the UPDF contingent serving under AUSSOM for its professionalism and contribution to peace and security in the region.

“We recognize the professional manner in which you conduct your operations. You have built a good reputation and will remain part of Somalia’s history,” Mr Mohammed said.

He reaffirmed the youth council’s commitment to continued cooperation with AUSSOM, particularly the UPDF contingent, noting that the longstanding partnership between the people of Barawe and the Ugandan troops has played a significant role in maintaining peace and stability in the district.

The meeting was attended by the Battle Group 45 Military Intelligence Officer, Major David Akandwanaho; the Political Commissar, Major Fred Emuron; the Engineer, Major Charles Baraza; the Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC) Officer, Lieutenant Christopher Birungi; and leaders of the Barawe District Youth Council, among others.
