The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF), serving under the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), together with the Somali National Armed Forces (SNAF), have launched the third phase of Operation Silent Storm to retake Awdheegle town from Al-Shabaab terrorists.
Awdheegle, located 80 kilometres southwest of Mogadishu in the Lower Shabelle region, is the last of three towns seized by Al-Shabaab in March. The ongoing offensive marks a significant push by joint forces to restore government control in the area.
During the latest operations, troops captured two Al-Shabaab fighters and recovered six sub-machine guns, binoculars, and a cache of ammunition. Commanders say the advance is expected to pave the way for the complete liberation of strategic towns linking to Mogadishu.
Al-Shabaab has suffered heavy territorial, manpower, and equipment losses in recent engagements with AUSSOM, UPDF, and SNAF forces.
The operation is aimed at degrading and eliminating the terrorist group, protecting civilians and critical infrastructure, with the broader goal of fostering a safer and more stable Somalia
