UPDF Troops In South Sudan Celebrate Uganda’s 63rd Independence Anniversary

The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces joint task force operating under Operation Mlinzi Wakimya, in South Sudan joined Ugandans worldwide in celebrating Uganda’s 63rd Independence Anniversary. The event brought together Ugandan troops, South Sudanese counterparts, and members of the local community.

The Chief Guest, Uganda’s Ambassador to South Sudan, H.E. Brig Gen Ronnie Balya, said national celebrations like Independence Day offer citizens an opportunity to reflect on their country’s journey and future.

He praised the UPDF for its commitment to national and regional stability under the leadership of the Commander-in-Chief, H.E. Gen (Rtd) Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, and the Chief of Defence Forces, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba.

“I sincerely commend the excellent work of the UPDF in keeping Uganda and the region safe from various threats. I salute them for this noble cause,” Ambassador Balya said.

He applauded the Government of South Sudan for its ongoing efforts toward restoring peace, stability, and economic transformation.

“Uganda and South Sudan are brotherly and strategic neighbours with a long history of cooperation, especially in the struggle for liberation and self-determination,” he added.

Maj Gen Kuai Deng, who represented the Chief of Defence Forces of the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF), Gen Paul Nang Majok, hailed the strong bilateral relations between the two countries.

“We appreciate Presidents Salva Kiir Mayardit and Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for maintaining a firm relationship between South Sudan and Uganda. We are one people from the beginning of creation, sharing culture, heritage, and even language, many of us speak Luo,” Maj Gen Deng said.

In his remarks, the Joint Task Force Commander, Brig Gen Anthony Lukwago Mbuusi noted that independence is not merely a date in history but a continuous mission that demands renewal and sacrifice.

“Here in South Sudan, under the Joint Task Force, we embody the spirit of Pan-Africanism by standing shoulder to shoulder with our brothers and sisters. Our presence and cooperation reaffirm that Uganda’s freedom is intertwined with the peace and stability of our neighbours,” said Brig Gen Mbuusi.

The ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including Battle Group Commander Col Bernard Kashemeza, Commanding Officer Col JM Kabila, and guests from the business community.
