UPDF Troops Provide Free Medical Care in Nakaseke District During Readiness Exercise

Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) troops from the International Peace Support Operations Training Centre (IPSO-TC) in Singo offered free medical treatment to hundreds of residents in the Kapeka community, in Nakaseke District. The medical camp, held at Naluvule Township, was part of the ongoing Mission Readiness Exercise (MRX) for Battle Group 47.

Colonel David Watasa, Chief Instructor of IPSO-TC, addressed local leaders and residents, emphasising the exercise’s dual purpose.

“Our numeric strength is derived from the civil populace, and therefore, we must give back to the community through free medical services as we relate and build trust,” Col. Watasa stated. He explained that such activities are integral to training, allowing troops to extend corporate social responsibility and enhance civil-military cooperation, a practice essential for future missions.

Colonel Wilson Barigye, Commander of Battle Group 47, reiterated that community outreach is a core part of UPDF doctrine. He said that these efforts help consolidate peace, identify local challenges, and develop solutions to improve livelihoods.

Major Edson Muheirwoh, the IPSO-TC Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC) officer, commended the community’s turnout and participation in a joint cleanliness drive at Naluvule Market. He pledged to strengthen ongoing cooperation through mobilisation and public health education to foster healthier living conditions and socio-economic transformation

Ms. Nakayenga Joyce, a Nakaseke District Councillor, praised the UPDF for its sustained partnership with civilians. “We are grateful for the continued free treatment and security provided by the UPDF across Nakaseke District,” she said.

During the one-day camp, patients received treatment for communicable and non-communicable diseases, laboratory investigations, family planning services, and antenatal care. Troops also supported general sanitation efforts in the township.

The event was attended by Lt Col Alfred Otim, Deputy Commander of Battle Group 47; Maj Benard Wandera, Course Coordinator; Maj Herbert Obita, Head of the Training Team; Maj Gordon Tushabe, Directing Staff; Maj Robert Byebiroha, Political Commissar; junior officers; and local leaders.
