The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) 501 Brigade has received a new commander following a handover and takeover ceremony officiated by the Commander of the 4 Infantry Division, Major General Felix Busizoori, at Zoka in Adjumani District.
During the ceremony, Lt Col Robert Nahamya officially assumed command of the Brigade from Col Nathan Bainomugisha, who will proceed to the National Defence College-Uganda for further military training.
Maj Gen Busizoori congratulated both officers and observed that attitudes towards military training have evolved significantly over the years.
“In the past, being nominated for training was viewed as a punishment, with some believing it meant being removed from attractive assignments. Today, training is recognised as an opportunity that adds value to one’s career and future,” he said.
Maj Gen Busizoori commended Col Bainomugisha for his leadership and contribution to stabilising Zoka, Apa, and the surrounding areas during his tenure. He urged Lt Col Nahamya to build on those achievements by making effective use of available resources, planning within available means, maintaining operational flexibility, and strengthening engagement with communities across his area of responsibility.
In his remarks, Col Bainomugisha expressed gratitude to Maj Gen Busizoori for his exemplary leadership and the transformation realised across Northern Uganda during his command.
On his part, Lt Col Nahamya thanked the UPDF leadership for entrusting him with the responsibility of leading the 501 Brigade. He pledged to command the brigade professionally, uphold the core values of the UPDF, and work diligently to advance the mission and objectives of the 4th Infantry Division.
Speaking on behalf of the Adjumani District Security Committee, the Deputy Resident District Commissioner, Mr Emanuel Okware, thanked the UPDF for its continued efforts in safeguarding the people of Adjumani and pledged the committee’s continued cooperation.
The Resident District Commissioner of Amuru District, Mr Osibon Ocheng, commended Maj Gen Busizoori for championing initiatives that have encouraged communities to embrace agriculture and improve their livelihoods. He also praised the establishment of the Apa medical facility and recognised the professionalism and discipline demonstrated by commanders in promoting community development.
The ceremony was attended by the Deputy Commander of the 4th Infantry Division, battalion commanders, the Resident District Commissioners of Adjumani and Amuru districts, departmental heads, and other guests.
