UPDF 2 Infantry Division Triumphs Over RDF in Rwanda Friendly Match

The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) 2 Infantry Division football team defeated the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) 5 Infantry Division in a tightly contested friendly match at Ubworoherane Stadium in Musanze District, Rwanda.

The match ended 1–1 in regular time before UPDF clinched victory 8–7 in a penalty shootout.

The fixture marked the second “proximity match” between the two armies, following their first encounter at Kyamate Playground in Ntungamo District, Uganda, on 31 May 2025. These matches are part of a broader initiative to strengthen cooperation between the forces through sports and cultural exchanges.

Maj Gen Alex Kagame, the RDF Chief of Staff – Reserve Force, speaking on behalf of the Chief of Defence Staff, said the match carried a deeper meaning.

He noted that the RDF and UPDF enjoy a long-standing bond of friendship and cooperation, and the game was a symbol of unity, trust, and their shared commitment to a secure and stable future for the region.

Speaking after the game, Maj Gen Paul Muhanguzi, Commander of the UPDF 2 Infantry Division, praised Rwanda’s hospitality. “Rwanda is our second home away from home. We are grateful for the cordial relationship we enjoy not only with civilians in Uganda but across the entire region,” he said.

He added, “Today we enjoy the fruits of Rwanda’s patriotic army liberation struggle, our brotherhood, and our shared purpose.”

Northern Province Governor Maurice Mugabowagahunde described the initiative as a strong example of peace-building and community engagement.

Beyond the excitement of football, the matches are intended to foster bilateral ties, curb cross-border crime, and promote socio-economic transformation in border communities.
