Uganda And Malawi Defence Forces Root For Cooperation In Defence

The Chief of Staff-Land Force, Major General Jack Bakasumba has underscored the importance of robust regional security mechanisms in coordinating and strengthening partnerships between neighbouring militaries.

 

Maj Gen Bakasumba made the remarks today at the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs Headquarters where he represented the Joint Chief of Staff as the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces hosted a delegation from the Malawi Defence Forces. The meeting was aimed at sharing experiences and understanding solutions towards global security challenges.

 

He thanked the Malawian Delegation for espousing a cordial relationship with Uganda, adding working together strengthened an existing good relationship between the two countries. “The relationship between Malawi and Uganda is not to be taken for granted given the similar threats we have faced by the two countries.”

 

On the Defence Cooperation Agreement, Maj Gen Bakasumba recognized it as the legal instrument binding the nations to cooperate and address common strategic security interests.

 

The Malawi Defence Forces Chief of Staff and head of the delegation, Maj Gen George Jaffu thanked the President of the Republic of Uganda H.E Gen (Rtd) Yoweri K Museveni for accepting their request to come and discuss matters of importance on Defence and Security of the two Nations. “It is no secret that Malawi and Uganda have enjoyed friendly relations since time memorial. The two countries have a common denominator and it is not surprising that we share common opportunities and threats.”

 

“We therefore desire to tap and benefit from your experience. We hope that this meeting can discuss and propose various areas of cooperation which may include but not limited to training, intelligence coordination and sharing legal, Defence industry, logistics, exchange visits and other areas that may be deemed imperative from time to time,” Maj Gen Jaffu added.

 

The meeting was attended by the UPDF Deputy Chief of Legal Services, Col Moses Wandera, Director of Strategic Intelligence, Col David Lumumba, Col Kenneth Shillingi, Malawi Chief of Military Intelligence Brig Gen H.B Dzoole, Malawi Chief of Legal Services Col GA Mittawa, among other Officers.
