Uganda and Japan Forge Stronger Defence Ties

Maj Gen Jack Bakasumba, the Chief of Joint Staff, has underscored the essential need for collaborative action in the fight against terrorism and in addressing the challenges facing Africa. He stressed the importance of unity among African nations in tackling their own issues and supporting effective leadership.

During a meeting with the Japanese Deputy Head of Mission and the Defence Attaché to Uganda (based in Nairobi) at the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs in Mbuya (MODVA), Maj Gen Bakasumba reaffirmed Uganda’s commitment to safeguarding the welfare of refugees, despite operating with limited resources.

He emphasised the provision of free education in government schools and access to health services as a testament to Uganda’s dedication to aiding vulnerable communities.

Maj Gen Bakasumba praised the robust bilateral relationship between Uganda and Japan, stressing that Japan’s support is deeply appreciated.

The Japanese Deputy Head of Mission, Tomotaka Yoshimura, acknowledged Uganda’s crucial role in promoting regional stability and expressed Japan’s intention to contribute to the operations of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Force (UPDF).

He highlighted Uganda’s positive policy of integrating refugees into host communities, noting Japan’s favourable perspective on these efforts as a co-chair of the Global Refugees Forum.

Commander Keiko Kawashima, the Japan Defence Attaché to Uganda (based in Nairobi), remarked that the Japanese government is prepared to offer training opportunities, particularly in heavy equipment, further enhancing the cooperation between the two nations.

The meeting also saw the participation of Brig Gen James Kinalwa from Joint Staff Human Resource Management, Col Naboth Mwesigwa, Director of Defence and International Engagements, and Col William Kakuru.
