Gen Kainerugaba Concludes Kigali Visit

Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces and Senior Presidential Advisor for Special Operations, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, concluded his two-day working visit to Kigali on Monday.

The highlight of the visit was a meeting with Rwandan President Paul Kagame. The two leaders discussed strengthening bilateral ties and enhancing cooperation on regional peace, security, and stability.

Gen Kainerugaba has made several visits to Kigali in recent years, with some of these engagements leading to improved bilateral relations and cooperation between Uganda and Rwanda.

Notably, past meetings between Gen Kainerugaba and President Kagame helped resolve a major diplomatic standoff between the two countries that had previously restricted trade and border movements.

Following the resolution of that crisis, President Kagame commended Gen Kainerugaba during a visit to Uganda, noting that “great generals are not those who fight and win wars, but those who win peace”—a firm acknowledgment of the CDF’s role in restoring relations.

During his latest stay in Kigali, Gen Kainerugaba toured several infrastructure projects, including the King Faisal Hospital Expansion Project. He also visited Nyandungu Eco Park and the Parklane Estate residential development, guided by Kigali City Mayor Mr. Sam Dusengiyumva.

Gen Kainerugaba also held talks with NBA Africa CEO Clare Akamanzi. The discussion focused on developing basketball in Uganda, including proposals to establish a Junior NBA League in partnership with Uganda’s Ministry of Education and Sports.

As the visit came to a close, Gen Kainerugaba was seen off at Kigali International Airport by his Rwandan counterpart, Rwanda Defence Force Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Mubarakh Muganga. Also present were RDF Republican Guard Commander Maj. Gen. Willy Rwagasana and Uganda’s Defence Attaché to Rwanda, Col Ezekiel Matsiko.
